Sung in Italian with French subtitles

Don Giovanni proudly pins its colours to the mast as a dramma giocoso. The expression is difficult to translate as it appears to be a contradiction in terms. However, as soon as we delve deeper, we are sucked into a delightful maelstrom of ambiguities. Nothing is what it seems: libertinage is celebrated but couples’ paths cross and then diverge. Fate makes light of masquerades until the final challenge. Baritone Erwin Schrott embodies the role of the insatiable seducer and exploits the twin assets of his deep refined voice and good looks. How can one resist a man whom the New York Times recently dubbed “the Marlon Brando of opera”. Tenors beware, a baritone can also be a formidable seducer.
