Les Scènes de la vie de bohème by Henri Murger appeared in serialised form in the Parisian newspaper Le Corsaire between 1845 and 1849. Before it was adapted by Puccini’s librettists, it was initially performed as a play at the Théâtre des Variétés. The composer’s version gives greater prominence to the fragile figure of Mimi and audiences saw the work as the archetypal portrayal of Paris in the era of carefree students and artists in the mid-nineteenth century. Debussy himself was moved to declare: “I don’t know another person who has described Paris during this era as well as Puccini in La Bohème”. In this quintessentially French work, we can reacquaint ourselves with the talented Gianandra Noseda and the chorus and orchestra of the Teatro Regio Torino. Love clearly knows no frontiers.
