As the successor to Meyerbeer, Berlioz and Gounod, Massenet nurtured the idea of “opera in the French style” throughout his career, demonstrating some of the most dazzling craftsmanship and skill of his generation. However, posterity was slow to acknowledge the part he played in achieving this and despite a revival of interest in the 1970s, Manon and Werther are the only two works which regularly feature on the programmes of international theatre venues. Both are admittedly fine examples of his taste for orchestral virtuosity, innate theatricality and admiration for the French language. Manon offers the full palette of opera in the French style without ever falling into the trap of excess or caricature. The vocal writing exploits the full gamut of emotions from the virtuosity of love to the darkest suffering. Manon and her Chevalier are played by the handsome pairing of Juan Diego Flórez, a former seasoned bel canto tenor who is now tackling more operatic roles with equal success (he recently performed in a lavish production of Werther in Zurich), and the young coloratura soprano Nino Machaidze, who is also an accomplished bel canto performer, who recently played Gilda at the Opéra de Paris.
