THE iconic ballet and Christmas show par excellence, The Nutcracker is still a favourite with audiences. Just like in Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty, love and sincerity triumph over the forces of evil. A little girl has dream on Christmas Eve. Emotions are aroused, tenderness makes its presence felt and the realm of childhood gradually merges into the adult world. Behind an innocent children’s tale lies a true coming of age story told through the medium of dance. While children admire Drosselmeyer’s magic tricks and enjoy the fear inspired by the rat dance, adults can appreciate the clever story and the unprecedented virtuosity of the choreography. This is the first time that the Kiev Opera Ballet has come back to Paris since its last tour in 1964. Now this exceptional company tours worldwide from Italy to Japan and it is high time for Parisian audiences to discover this excellent dance troupe. For its trip to Paris and to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the National Opera of Ukraine, the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées will be decked in traditional Ukrainian Christmas style throughout this series of performances.
