Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest
Valery Gergiev direction
Sergey Khachatryan violin
Valery Gergiev delivers his signature repertoire in this ideal (and rare) opportunity to hear violinist Sergey Khachatryan.
Chostakovitch Violin Concerto No. 1 op. 77
Prokofiev Symphony No. 6 op. 111
Approximate running time
1st part: 40mn - Intermission: 20mn - 2nd part: 45mn
The composition of Violin Concerto No. 1 is inextricably associated with its performer David Oïstrakh, to whom it was dedicated. Shostakovich admired his extraordinary technique and penned these intimidatingly difficult pages with him in mind. The young Armenian violinist Sergey Khachatryan made a profound impression with his recording of this concerto on the Naïve label, and his repeat live performance will surely have the same impact. In the second half, Prokofiev’s penultimate symphonic composition, Symphony No. 6, will showcase his ambitious writing and sweep the audience away with its feverish emotional atmosphere.
