Rameau Orchestral Suite excerpt from Les Boréades
A zany work! The “ballet comique” Don Quichotte chez la Duchesse by Boismortier, stunned audiences in 1743. It is a mystification without a love story, featuring monsters and surreal characters. In short, it is a parody, a farce in the form of a “play within a play” inspired the writing of Rameau. Rameau never heard a performance of Les Boréades, his last major score which he composed at the age of eighty. This hugely inventive tragédie lyrique was performed for the very first time at the Opéra de Paris in 2003! It is quintessentially Baroque. To round off the evening, violinist Fabio Biondi will play and conduct a concerto by Jean-Marie Leclair. His writing is the epitome of elegance, blending Italian influences with the pared-down expressions of the French style.
