His studies with Sviatoslav Richter, of whom he is perhaps the most authentic disciple, have had a profound influence on him. His playing combines the two polar extremes of power and colour, of fantasy and an innate sense of the structure of works. Alexander Melnikov, who has mastered the secrets of Russian, German and French repertoire alike, is finally performing in a major recital at the Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, featuring three composers to whom he is particularly attached: Schumann, Brahms and Debussy, whose Preludes he has just recorded.
