A breath of collegiality blows through La Grande Écurie just as surely as vaudeville pervades Opportunity Makes a Thief, a rare one-act opera by Rossini. It is all the more enjoyable as the librettist has entered into the spirit of the story with a quid pro quo based around the accidental exchange of suitcases in a country inn which gives rise to delightful confusion when bold Don Parmenione tries to masquerade as Count Alberto in the hope of marrying his betrothed, who is also disguised as a chambermaid! A team of seasoned singers of this repertoire has been formed especially for this concert version and this collaboration with Jean-Claude Malgoire should ring true historically as it swirls, leaps and falls in a manner befitting Napoleonic Italy in 1812.
