Debargue Trio for piano, violin and cello in E flat major
Chostakovitch Trio for piano, violin and cello No. 2 op. 67

You don’t just attend a performance by Lucas Debargue to hear the musician. Beneath the guise of a young poet fresh from the garret hides a man with a multiplicity of obsessions, anxious and raw, like any artist mapping out his path. Although this artist is still engaged in the process of defining himself, his performances are already a true act of faith. Seeing and hearing Debargue, is like watching someone wrestle with an angel – simultaneously physical and clearly metaphysical. For Debargue, performing means constantly issuing challenges and embracing risk wholeheartedly. Flanked by his two friends the Castro-Balbi brothers – David on violin, and Alexandre on cello – he offers us a truly caustic Shostakovich, with an additional trio of his own devising. This is a rare example of musical omniscience.
