This is the opening of Prokofiev’s musical tale which is known worldwide and has formed part of the early musical experiences of generations of children. By playing truant in the meadow, Peter gives voice to the instruments of the orchestra: the trill of the flute-bird and the grumbling notes of grandfather played by the bassoon. While enthusiastic narrator Elliot Jenicot delivers the story, projections of unusual children’s pictures inspired by the fantastical, humorous and gothic world of director Tim Burton bring a contemporary bite to this score, which forms an integral part of our global cultural heritage.
