Trio Wanderer

A trio which has long since proved its mettle delivers a programme of fire and ice.

Trio Wanderer - DR

Liszt Tristia, from La Vallée d’Obermann (transcription by Liszt)
Suk Elégie op. 23
Rachmaninov Trio op. 9

Expertise and sumptuous sonority without inappropriate ostentation, and lively, full phrasing – all the ingredients required to please the ear are gathered together in this legendary Trio, one of the only works of its kind to have improved with age. The Wanderer Trio do not need to fill their phrasing with hysterical intent as they do not strive for unusual effects. A natural approach and economical mastery are more than sufficient.

We can now hear them perform opus 9, the second and most extensive of Rachmaninov’s “elegiac” trios. This year, they have taken the score back to basics by comparing it with two rare works: firstly the very subtle Elegy by Suk, and secondly Tristia with its muted menace, an apocryphal adaptation of Vallée d’Obermann for trio with piano, supplemented by Liszt himself. Fire and frost are forecast!
