Sandrine Piau, Tim Mead, and Emmanuelle Haïm and her Concert d’Astrée conjure up Handel’s heroes from Rinaldo, Rodelinda, Tamerlano, and Alcina. In all of these works, lovers explore fidelity, all-consuming passion, jealousy and other betrayals. Whether it be the inconsolable grief of an aria di speranza, the tender complaint of a lamento, or a love duet, the Master of London always enthrals us with his subtle translation of the infinitely wide spectrum of feelings into music. In this programme, our two soloists inhabit the roles sung by the great vocalists of the era such as sopranos Anna Maria Strada del Pò, Francesca Cuzzoni and castrati Giovanni Carestini and Francesco Bernardi. Handel was indebted to his favourite singers for his success as a composer for the opera stage which has lasted three centuries.
